C - High This is the intital post on this... I haven't done any research yet so maybe this is already answered in many forms.Recently I have seen a number of machines running MS Windows XP professional the automatic updates are not being installed... the error given is usually that the update failed. The Automatic update continues to attempt the same update, so I don't think it is a case of the update. After about 2 minutes researching I may have the fix. I will update later after I give it a try.

Fix still needed
The link mentioned 1)checking trusted sites.. not there. but I added it, 2) removing cache and history.. done. 3) Checking the program files/microsoft update directory... XML file not found on one computer, another was missing the microsoft update diectory. These were not removed, just missing. So, bottom-line, I still need a fix.Bob Snodgrass

xp update
bob, what update is failing? there are 2 things you can try but i'm not promissing anything. if there is a .NET update that needs to be done, do it and use the "review your update history" on the web site and if an update failed click the red "x" to see how MS says you can solve the issue. that's all i have for now given the info i've got. get me more and i'll see what else i can dig up.walt

Walter, thanks for the post. One machine is failing on a security update for MS Sql server 5 it's a different issue on the others. Finally ended up giving Microsoft to help via an email support request, believe it or not, they actually provided the specific help I needed. I ended up having to manually shut down services and run the update manually from the file system rather than using the update link provided. Bob Snodgrass
